Knit or Crochet for Charity

We now have a Warm Up America bin in the library. You can help make a difference in our community by knitting or crocheting (7”x9”) rectangle sections. Then, drop your finished rectangles into the bin. Warm Up America Volunteers will sew them into full afghans and distribute them to area shelters, nursing homes, children’s hospitals, or to others in need. Warm Up America is a nation-wide organization locally hosted by the Redford Suburban League. Want to know more? Please visit www.warmupamerica.com, or call Reva at (313) 537-0235.

Redford Recreational Readers

If you're a reader who would like an opportunity to discuss books with others, join the Redford Recreational Readers, our new book discussion group for adults.  We will be meeting the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7 pm, in one of the 2nd floor meeting rooms.  Each month you'll have an opportunity to meet fellow book lovers, share in group discussion of a selected book and suggest titles for future discussions.

Registration is not required, but the library has limited copies of each book.  If you sign up in advance at the Adult Reference Desk, we'll make every effort to obtain a copy for you from another library.

Our current book discussion titles:

June 10: The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan [also available as abridged book on tape and VHS]

In 1949 four Chinese women - drawn together by the shadow of their past - begin meeting in San Francisco to play mah jong, invest in stocks, eat dim sum and "say" stories.  They call their gathering the Joy Luck Club.  Nearly forty years later, one of the members has died.  When her daughter comes to take her place, she learns of her mother's lifelong wish, and the tragic way in which it has come true.

July 8: Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith

In Brooklyn, New York, in 1927, Carl Brown and Annie McGairy meet and fall in love.  Though only 18, Annie travels alone to the Midwestern university where Carl is studying law to marry him.  Little did they know how difficult their first year of marriage would be, in a faraway place with little money and few friends.  But Carl and Annie come to realize that the struggles and uncertainty of poverty and hardship can be overcome by the strength of a loving, loyal relationship.

August 12: Reader's Roundtable

Recommend new books or share old favorites.

History Book Club

A book discussion group that focuses on books on history meets the first Monday of the month from 6:30 - 8 pm.  For further information, call Jim White at (734) 261-0874.
