The majority of the Library’s funding comes from local property taxes. Voters approved a 1 mill operating fund in perpetuity in 1994. With the decline in property values in recent years, the Library was forced to draw more and more on its savings to operate. On November 4, 2014, Redford Township voters approved 1.4 mills of supplemental operating funds for 8 years. This allowed the library to re-open on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons during the school year, and restore other services that were cut since 2008. The additional operating funds will also allow the Library to preserve the remaining fund balance (savings) at a responsible level to help ensure financial stability.
The Library’s fiscal year is April 1-March 31.
